"Let's talk unreliable speech. My name is Tyler, I have speech but spelling has changed my life. You see, my voice is automatic, stuck always picking the last option. For example, when the bathroom is mentioned I will say bathroom yes even when I do not have to go. Spelling is purposeful, meaning I get to share my true thoughts in my brain. Listen to my spelling over my voice." - Tyler

This is Justin. Sometimes his voice says one thing, but his spelling tells the real story. This is apraxia. This is the brain–body disconnect. And this is why spelling matters. Unreliable speech doesn’t mean unreliable thoughts. Presume competence. Provide access.
